Oddział Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Katowicach został powołany w 1974 r. Obejmuje swoim działaniem województwa śląskie i opolskie.

Działalność Oddziału realizowana jest poprzez komisje naukowe. Szczególne znaczenie ma działalność Oddziału inspirująca i koordynująca prace naukowe w regionie. Zakres działania Oddziału obejmuje też współpracę ze szkołami wyższymi. Funkcjonują porozumienia o współpracy z Uniwersytetem Śląskim, Politechniką Śląską i Uniwersytetem Ekonomicznym. W celu większej integracji z placówkami szkolnictwa wyższego utworzono Regionalne Porozumienie Rektorów, w którego skład wchodzi również prezes Oddziału. Z inicjatywy Oddziału podjęto prace nad uruchomieniem w województwie śląskim sieci informatycznej pod nazwą Śląska Akademicka Sieć Komputerowa, której prace koordynuje Rada Założycielska pod przewodnictwem prezesa Oddziału.

Z inicjatywy Oddziału PAN powstały założenia regionalnej polityki naukowej określające priorytety naukowe oraz rozwiązania organizacyjne i finansowe, które mają stymulować rozwój nauki w kierunkach najkorzystniejszych ze społecznego punktu widzenia. Za najważniejsze w strategii rozwoju regionu uznano naukę o materiałach i inżynierię materiałową oraz ochronę środowiska. Waga wybranych kierunków i konieczność integracji wokół nich społeczności naukowej spowodowały zorganizowanie przy Oddziale zespołu integrującego badania z obszaru nauki o materiałach. Ochrona środowiska naturalnego ma szczególne znaczenie dla regionu śląskiego. Z inicjatywy Oddziału podjęto działania na rzecz współpracy różnych placówek w opracowaniu wspólnego projektu zamawianego w tym zakresie. Oddział objął też patronat nad przygotowaniem i realizacją Górnośląskiego Ogrodu Botanicznego.

Oddział uczestniczy w upowszechnianiu nauki, w tym - w organizowaniu imprez popularnonaukowych i festiwali nauki. Rozpoczęło działalność Śląskie Środowiskowe Studium Doktoranckie z zakresu inżynierii środowiska. W realizację projektu zaangażowane są wyższe uczelnie, placówki PAN i instytuty resortowe.

Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences

The Katowice Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) established by resolution No.1/74 at the General Assembly of PAN on December 19, 1974, has in its ranks 17 members of PAN including 9 full members. The Branch’s activity covers the area of the Opole and Silesia Provinces. The PAN research centres operating in these regions are:

- Centre of Polymer Chemistry in Zabrze

- Institute of Chemical Engineering in Gliwice

- Institute of Theoretical and Applied Information Sciences in Gliwice

- Institute of Environmental Engineering in Zabrze

- Institute of Ichtyobiology and Aquaculture in Gołysz

- Fish Culture Experimental Station in Gołysz

The principal activity of the Branch is implemented to a great extent through its scientific committees (22) with its 1315 members. The committees consist of senior research scientists from various PAN centres, universities and R&D units nominated by the Branch’s Board. It is also worth emphasizing that the junior research workers are involved in the work of the committees as well. The chief task of the committees is to hold scientific meetings and conferences that form a platform for the exchange of views, ideas and experience among the representatives of the region’s scientific community.

The Branch has initiated and worked out a regional scientific strategy that defines the scientific priorities and adopts organisational and financial solutions stimulating the development of science in fields most beneficial to the society. Among the fields singled out as the ones of prime importance are material science and engineering and environmental protection.

The Branch has also signed agreements on mutual cooperation with the many institutions of higher education operating in this region. It is also not uncommon for senior research scientists, employed at the various PAN centres, to participate in the educational process of these institutions. The establinshing of the Regional Agreement of Rectors, chiefly initiated by the Branch, with the chairman of the Branch as its member and the setting up of the Silesian Academic Computer Network constitute further examples of integration between the institutions of higher education and PAN in our region.

In the period of its activity the Branch has published over 220 voluminous scientific works such as the regularly issued „Linguistica Silesiana”, „Slaskie Miscellanea” (Silesian Miscellanea) and „Spotkania z literatura” („Encounters with literature”).
